Admission Requirements:

Students must have a superior knowledge of MS Word, including ability to format documents in detail; i.e., inserting and changing headers and footers, utilizing macros, auto-correct feature, styles, templates etc.;
A minimum typing speed of 50 words per minute minimum is strongly recommended;
Excellent listening and comprehension skills;
Exceptional English language proficiency

Hardware and Software Requirements:

A computer with Microsoft Word
At least two USB ports
A sound card
Headset and a foot pedal (these are not sold through the college). You may purchase them through the Liberty Recording at: http://www.libertyrecording.com/VECPedal_main.htm OR at any retailer of your choice.

1. How does someone become authorized to produce & certify transcripts in court proceedings in Ontario?

Individuals wishing to become an authorized court transcriptionist must complete qualification training and testing through an Ontario educational institution recognized by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Training and qualifications will be administered by the educational institutions. Upon proof of successful completion of the curriculum, as well as obtaining the required contractor security clearance, signing an agreement with Arkley Professional Services and paying the annual listing fee, the authorized court transcriptionist will be eligible to be added to the List of Authorized Court Transcriptionists for Ontario.

2. Why do I require listed hardware & software?

All students require a computer with the hardware and software listed below in order to participate in the webinars, and to listen to the recordings and produce transcripts. Students will be required to bring their own computer/laptop to class to complete the final exam.

3. What is the required pass mark for the course?

This is a PASS/FAIL course and students must achieve 98 percent accuracy on the final examination to be successful. Upon successful completion, graduates will be presented with a qualification certificate and will be eligible to be added to the registry of Authorized Court Transcriptionists for Ontario. Please NOTE that the required passing grade of 98% is set as a required standard by the Ministry of Attorney General and not individual colleges.

4. Once I pass the course, how do I register as an ACT?

Authorized Court Transcriptionists for Ontario maintain a list of Authorized Court Transcriptionists. You may register as an ACT and find additional information on their website at: https://www.courttranscriptontario.ca/home/faq#4

5. How many classes can I miss?

Attendance for this course will be taken weekly by the professor(s). Students who are absent for more than two classes or do not submit class assignments as required, will not be eligible to participate in the final examination.

6. What class size is the course?

Our class is limited to up to 10 students. Since this course is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, only once you have formally registered and received a confirmation of enrollment, will your attendance in the course be reserved.

7. Can I cancel my registration?

If you are unable to attend the program your organization may name a replacement. A full refund will be issued for cancellations received a minimum of 30 days before the program start date. Written cancellations received after the 14th day will be subject to an administration fee of $150. Non-attendance or withdrawal after the program start date will result in complete forfeiture of the full program fee.
Please note that this program does not require the approval of the Superintendent under the Career Colleges Act, 2005.

Tania Ciurlia has been an Authorized Court Transcriptionist in Ontario since 2016 and prior to that a general transcriptionist. Tania is currently employed by the Ministry of the Attorney General as a Court and Client Representative in addition to typing court transcripts. Tania Ciurlia has prepared and certified thousands of transcripts, and has been involved in teaching and training transcribers for legal transcription since 2014. Tania Ciurlia is able to share her extensive knowledge and experience while educating individuals and introducing them to a career as a court transcriptionist.

Court Transcriptionist Certificate-Evening-: Our Court Transcriptionist Certificate on-line course will provide students with the qualifications required to become authorized to produce transcripts of proceedings from Ontario courts. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will meet the transcript qualification standards as set by the Ministry of the Attorney General and will be eligible to become an Authorized Court Transcriptionist pursuant to the Attorney General’s Approval and Authorization outlined in Ontario Regulation 158/03 of the Evidence Act.Students will learn the requirements to produce certified transcripts for Ontario courts in accordance with standards set by the Ministry of the Attorney General, legislation, regulation, policy and practice directions. Cancellations and Substitutions Substitution of registrants is permitted at any time. If you are unable to find a substitute, a full refund is available if a cancellation request is received in writing 21 days prior to the start of the course. If a cancellation request is made with less than 21 days notice, a $150 administration fee will apply. No other refund is available once the course begins. *This course does not require an approval under the Career Colleges Act, 2005.
